Effects of Organic Chemicals in Sludge Applied to Soil
Degradation and Toxicity to Organisms Living in Soil
Abstract
Phthalates, NP's, and NPE's degraded slowly, if at all, during 28 days in soil-sludge
mixtures, while LAS degraded fairly rapidly. Biodegradation of sludge for 14 days reduced
the nitrification process, but the sludge was still toxic to the reproduction of
collembola. Sludge-bound NP and LAS showed no effect on nitrification or survival of adult
collembola, but there was a marked effect on collembolan reproduction. PEC/PNEC > 1 for
both NP and LAS. For LAS the ratio decreased to below 1 after 141 and 174 days
respectively for two soils.
