Abstract
This conference report focuses on the meaning and application of the precautionary principle:  How much care is needed if scientific uncertainty arises about an action which could have a detrimental effect on the environment? The debate tries to clarify this question, and the presenters adress the issue from a number of different angles: administrative, technical and economical, and social. This publication presents the contributions made during the conference, gives short summaries and extracts of the debate and question time.
