Mesocosm experiments in the approval procedure
for pesticides

- a litterature study on effects of mesocosm characteristic and validity of extrapolation methods to protect sensitive species

Abstract
A critical analysis based on published aquatic mesocosm experiments
with pesticides examined to what extent the sensitivity of organisms was influenced by: (1) mesocosm characteristics (e.g. volume, depth, sediment), (2) when (season) and where (latitude) the experiments were carried out, (3) which taxonomic and functional groups were the most sensitive to insecticides and herbicides and (4) to what extent available single species test results can be used to protect the environment using various extrapolation procedures

The Danish Environmental Protection Agency will, when op-portunity offers, publish reports and contributions relating to environmental research and development projects financed via the Danish EPA.

Please note that publication does not signify that the contents of the reports necessarily reflect the views of the Danish EPA.

The reports are, however, published because the Danish EPA finds that the studies represent a valuable contribution to the debate on environmental policy in Denmark.
