Groundwater protection in selected countries

Point sources

Abstract
The report compares different strategies for protection of groundwater against point source contamination in five countries: Austria, Denmark, England, Spain and the USA. A quantitative comparison is made of the environmental pressure and of the groundwater resources. The role of the precautionary principle is discussed, and the concept of milestones as an instrument to assess different protection strategies is introduced. Milestones in efforts to protect the groundwater against point source contamination fall into one or more of three categories: legislative, technological and implementary.

The Danish Environmental Protection Agency will, when opportunity offers, publish reports and contributions relating to environmental research and development projects financed via the Danish EPA.

Please note that publication does not signify that the contents of the reports necessarily reflect the views of the Danish EPA.

The reports are, however, published because the Danish EPA finds that the studies represent a valuable contribution to the debate on environmental policy in Denmark.
