Survey of Chemical Substances in Consumer Products no. 52, 2005

Mapping and health assessment of chemical substances in shoe care products

Abstract
The purpose of the study has been to gain an overview over which problematic substances may be found in shoe care products as well as to identify possible health risks for consumers. The results show that there is a potential risk of health effects in the form of irritation of the respiratory system and effects on the nervous system by use of products which contain larger amounts of mineral turpentine. The report contains a number of recommendations for reducing the risk of exposure to problematic substances in the products when using shoe care products in the home.

The Danish Environmental Protection Agency will, when opportunity offers, publish reports and contributions relating to environmental research and development projects financed via the Danish EPA.

Please note that publication does not signify that the contents of the reports necessarily reflect the views of the Danish EPA.

The reports are, however, published because the Danish EPA finds that the studies represent a valuable contribution to the debate on environmental policy in Denmark.
