Waste Paper and Waste Board Statistics 2001

Summary

The memo “Statistics of recycled paper and cardboard 2001” (Statistik for returpapir og -pap 2001) illustrates the development of the market for recycled paper in 2001.

Table 0.1 shows the extent of the Danish paper consumption, the Danish paper production, the collection of recycled paper and the consumption of recycled paper at Danish factories, net exports of recycled paper and the stock increase from 1997 till 2001. Enclosure J, table 1, shows similar data for the period from 1990 till 2001.

Table 0.1. Consumption and recycling of paper 1997-2001. 1,000 tons

If the amounts in table 0.1 are converted to kg per citizen2 the following is obtained for 2001:

  • Consumption of new paper 254 kg
  • Collection of recycled paper 135 kg
  • Consumption of recycled paper 75 kg
  • Net exports of recycled paper 63 kg

“Statistics of recycled paper and cardboard 2001” shows that:

  • compared to 2000, the consumption of new paper increased by 13,000 tons, corresponding to 1%
  • compared to 2000, the Danish paper production decreased by 32,000 tons, corresponding to 8%
  • compared to 2000, the collection of recycled paper increased by 11,000 tons, corresponding to 2 %
  • the collection percentage for 2001 can be assessed at 53 %. In 2000, the collection percentage was also estimated at 53 %
  • the Danish paper production of 381,210 tons included 402,668 tons of recycled paper. The consumption of recycled paper exceeds the paper production, because impurities etc. are sorted out during reprocessing
  • the prices for all qualities of recycled paper have been stable in 2001.

The consumption of recycled paper at the Danish factories that use recycled paper as well as the production at these factories have declined for the first time since 1994.

In 2001, the consumption of recycled paper with regard to weight amounted to 106 % of the total production at the factories. In 2000, the corresponding share was 105 %.

2 In 2001, the average population amounted to 5,355,082 persons /1/.
