Plastic Packaging Statistics 2002
Summary
The purpose of this report is to illustrate the development of the market for recycling of plastic packaging waste in 2002.
The study shows the amount of plastic packaging waste being collected in Denmark and the amount of plastic packaging being
consumed in Denmark. The table summarises the results.

packaging for 2002.
The statistical data concerning plastic packaging shows the following:
- The amount of plastic packaging waste collected for recycling in Denmarkin 2002 was 22,792 tons equivalent to 4.6 kg
per inhabitant or 10.2 kg per household.
- The potential in 2002 is 157,258 tons equivalent 29.4 kg per inhabitant or 64.9 kg per household.
- The amount of plastic packaging waste collected for recycling in Denmark amounted to 24,409 tons in 2002. The
increase compared to 2001 was 3,588 tons or 17 %. The Agreement on Transport Packaging, as well as the municipal
assignment schemes for transport packaging has in 2002 caused a fairly good increase in the rates of collection for
recycling purposes.
- In 2002 15.5 % of the plastic packaging waste in Denmark was collected for recycling. In 2001 the percentage of
collected packaging was 13.9 %.
- PE made up approx. 73 % of the potential and approx. 83 % of the collected amounts. These figures are almost
unchanged compared to 2001.
- The export of plastic packaging rose from 2001 to 2002 with 10% from
- 49 % to 59 % of the total collected amount.
- Approx. 46 % of the plastic packaging being reprocessed in Denmark in 2002 was imported from abroad. In 2001 this
figure was 57 %.
- In 2002 the reprocessing plants had the capacity to receive 75-90 % more plastic packaging than the amounts they
received.
