Metal Packaging Statistics 2002

Summary

The purpose of these statistics is to illustrate developments in recycling of metal packaging waste in 2002.

The amount of metal packaging waste being collected in Denmark was examined. This figure was compared to the amount of metal packaging being consumed in Denmark. On the basis of these findings, the recycling percentage was calculated.

The table hereunder summarises the results.

The statistical data on metal packaging for 2002 show the following:

  • The total amount of metal packaging waste in Denmark amounted in 2002 to approx. 41,119 tonnes.
  • In 2002 nearly 42.2 per cent or 17,351 tonnes of the metal packaging waste in Denmark was collected for recycling purposes. In 2002, about half of the amount was collected directly as used packaging, primarily from industries, or it was collected together with all other metal items at municipal recycling stations for household waste. The other half was collected from incineration slag.
  • Steel packaging and tinplate comprised 92 per cent of the total collected.
  • The figures for collected metal packaging are rather uncertain.

Tabel 2 Collection of metal packaging in Denmark in 2000, 2001 0g 2002 tonnes

  Collected
Collected directly and from recycling stations 2000 2001 2002
Steel and tinplate 7,476 7,122 7,719
Aluminium 955 1,270 1,400
Total metal packaging 8,431 8,392 9,119
Collected from incineration slag Not calculated Not calculated 8,232

From Table 2 the development in the collected amounts of metal packaging can be seen. There has only been a tiny increase in the collection of steel and tinplate. On the other hand there has been a very high increase in the collection of aluminium. The increase in collection of aluminium is due to an increased collection of aluminium cans from an increased cross-frontier shopping (Germany).
