More environmentally friendly alternatives to PFOS-compounds and PFOA
Abstract
Perfluoroctanesulphonate (PFOS) and related substances areused in several
industrial and consumer products due to theirability to repel both water and oil.
PFOA are found as animpurity. The substances are very persistent and
foundwidespread in the environment. Perfluorinated substances have negative
effects on a.o. the liver and can have endocrine disrupting effects. The use of
PFOS and PFOA and related substances in Denmark and other countries is described,
and likewise the use of alternatives is described. The environmentally as well
as the effects on health for PFOS, PFOA, and related substances and the
alternatives are evaluated.
