Development of a Bunker Norm for Ships Appendix 6Fishing Vessels Fishing vessels are present in all Danish waters. They come in many sizes – right from small commercial boats weighing a few tons to large ocean-going trawlers of several thousand tons. In 1995 Danish fishing vessels of more than five tons numbered about 2,400. On board those ships were main engines delivering a total output of approx. 400 MW. The sailing pattern of these vessels varies considerably. The smallest cutters fish close to the home port, whereas the larger ones may well fish far from domestic waters. Danish fishing vessels all use marine gas oil (MGO) with a low sulphur content (less than 0.2%) as fuel. Their typical machine output ranges from about 100 to 800 kW. Their total yearly consumption of gas oil is approx. 160,000 tonnes. Leisure Craft Today, most sailing-boats are equipped with a motor for propulsion in dead calm and for harbour manoeuvres. The motor of a sailing-boat may be either a diesel or a petrol motor. Typical sizes for motors in sailing boats are from a few kW to about 30 kW. Motor boats can have motors in various sizes from about 10 kW for the smallest boats and up to 500 or 800 kW for the biggest cabin cruisers. The average output of the motors has been estimated as 15 kW, the specific fuel consumption as 450 g/kWh, and the yearly operating time as 15 hours. It is further assumed that 65% of the output converted into energy comes from diesel motors, and that the fuel has a sulphur content of 0.1%.
