AMAP Greenland and the Faroe Islands 1997-2001

Vol. 1: Human Health

Abstract
The report presents monitoring and assessment of demography, lifestyle
and contaminant levels in Greenland among men and women, Northwest and
East Greenland, and pregnant women in Sothwest Greenland ( AMAP HH
programmes 1997-2001). High bloodlevels of chlordanes, DDTs, hexachlorobenzene, and Hg (Uummannaq), betaHCH, and PCBs (Ittoqqortoormiit) correlate with smoking and diet of high trophic level marine mammals. There has been no tendency of declining contaminant levels since project start. Data from the Faroes show association between maternal contaminant levels and neurodevelopment effects.
