Urinopsamling og -anvendelse i Hyldespjældet

Summary and conclusions

On July the 27th 1999 the accumulating system for urine, which is covering 10 apartments with around 30 recidents in the residential area of Hyldespjældet in Albertslund, was taken into use. The project is part of the Danish Environmental Protection Agency´s program called "Nutrients from city to country".

Each of the 10 apartments had a urineseparating toilet installed and 5 common accumulating tanks, each of 3 cubicmetres, was buried. The object of the project was to try out the technique, reveal reactions of the residents and obtain experiences and measuring results to work out new legal guidelines within the area.

The project has shown that the residents are basically positive towards using natural nutrients from humans in the production of victuals in preference to fertilizers and wastewater sludge.

The urine separating toilet of the brand "Porsgrunn DS" works reasonable but not totally satisfactory. Further development of the product is still needed.

The storage of the urine in the tanks has not proven to give any obnoxious smells or other problems of hygiene.

The capacity of 5 tanks of 3 m3 is accessed not to be quite suffiecient for 30 residents.

The "project of urine collection and use in Hyldespjældet" has proven that it is both technically and socially possible and acceptable to collect human urine in a relatively densely populated suburb area where the collection potential, precisely because of the population density, is high.
