Emballageforsyningen i Danmark 2000

Summary in English

The survey of the Danish supply of packaging covering the year 2000 was accomplished by

the consulting company LOGISYS A/S, using the same method as in previous years. The total supply of packaging for year 2000 is calculated at a total of 1,006,828 tonnes. 43% is sales packaging and 57% is transportation packaging.

Between the surveys in 1999 and 2000, two separate investigations verifying the estimated quantity of plastics and aluminium packaging were carried out.

These investigations were initiated, because the Danish consumption figures for these materials are high compared with our neighbouring countries. The investigations are reported independently, and the conclusions are incorporated in the present survey of the supply of packaging.

The table below shows the total quantity of the packaging supply in the year 2000:

As in the survey covering 1999, the quantity of the packaging supply is broken down on the product groups making use of the packaging. In principle, this is another way to calculate the packaging supply. The results obtained by using these two methods should be identical, but there is a difference of 309,000 tonnes packaging. Of this 130,000 tonnes are pallets of wood, which are not included in the supply quantity, when the quantity is divided into product groups. The use of other returnable packaging is not included in this calculation either.

Further, a survey of the use of returnable packaging was made. It shows a supply of 633 million returnable packaging circulating a total of 2.9 billion times in the year 2000. In case this quantity of packaging is one-way packaging, this quantity will increase the total supply of packaging by 1.4 million tonnes per year – app. a doubling of the present quantity of packaging.
