The supply of packaging in 2008 has declined with approx. 7.8% compared to the 2007 quantity. The main reason for this reduction is caused by the international financial crisis and the general shortage of liquidity.

Furthermore, a survey of the use of returnable packaging has been completed. This shows that there is a supply of 240 millions returnable packaging and in total this packaging circulated 1.2 billion times in 2008. If this quantity of packaging were one-way packaging, it would have increased the total supply of packaging by 1,114,000 tonnes per year – more than a doubling of the present quantity of packaging. The amounts of returnable and reusable packaging are decreasing, in particular due to an increase in the use of one-way packaging for beverages.

The packaging statistics include a calculation of where the packaging quantities end as waste – in other words from where is the packaging has to be collected prior to its disposal. The greatest packaging amount has to be disposed from the private households. These account for approx. 45% of the total packaging waste.
