Danish Environmental Exports of Products and Consultancy Services within the Water Sector in 1999

2 Summary

The value of Danish companies’ exports to the water sector abroad has been computed in 1998 as EUR 0.28bn, equivalent to 0.6% of Denmark’s total exports in 1998. Exports of products account for almost 5/6 of this amount and exports of consultancy services for 1/6.

At first sight, these exports create employment for some 3,300 people in Denmark – approx. 2,800 in companies exporting products and approx. 500 in consultancy companies. To this can be added what is presumably a considerably larger number of employees in the service of subcontractors supplying to these companies.

There is a very high concentration in the water sector, as a handful of companies account for the majority of exports. Calculated by value, 80% stems from exports of relatively few companies, both in terms of products (5 companies) and in terms of consultancy services (4 companies).

Half of the product exports pertains to groundwater boring, pipeline networks and water treatment (oxygenation, filtration and dosing equipment). The other half pertains to products for wastewater treatment, sludge treatment, and sewerage systems.

As for exports of consultancy services, water supply and wastewater each accounts for approx. 40%. The remaining fifth comprises other consultancy,

e.g. consultancy offered to authorities etc. Water treatment within water supply plays

a considerably greater role in the export of consultancy services than is the case for the export of products.

67% of product exports goes to Western Europe, the USA, Canada, Australia etc., 17% to Asia, and 12% to Central and Eastern Europe. Of the total exports of consultancy services, 36% goes to Central and Eastern Europe, 21% to Asia and 20% to Africa, while Western Europe, the USA, Canada, Australia etc. jointly account for 21%.
