Substitution of cobalt driers in wood coatings

Abstract
The best candidate to substitute cobalt in oxidative drying coatings like alkyd paints is in this study shown to be a vanadium drier. Overall good drying properties are achieved, and at medium dosage level, yellowing is not really an issue even in light opaque systems. Hardness is not developed as fast as with cobalt but ends up at the same level. However to avoid prolonged tackiness of the resulting wood coating partly use of modified binders is required in the major part of a product range.
