The Danish Parliament also attaches high priority to environmental questions, with the politicians in general working for stricter environmental requirements. However, this is offset by the fact that local politicians have to meet not only the demand for a better environment, but also that for more jobs. Thus in practice environmental policy does not go so far that the environmental authorities close down serious enterprises; a solution is instead found that enables the enterprise to continue.
The majority of large and medium-sized Danish enterprises are generally receptive to
environmental requirements, and their professional organization, the Confederation of
Danish Industries, has shown willingness to cooperate with the authorities since the first
Environmental Protection Act in 1973. The enterprises have occasionally complained that
measures were being imposed more quickly in Denmark than in the countries of their
competitors, but this view has not led to new environmental requirements actually being
blocked.
