6. Conclusions

This review revolves ound assessment of EMC/SMC-values based on results from international studies. The review has revealed ranges for EMC/SMC-values for different pollutants as shown in Table 5.1-3.

There is of course no guarantee that all major international EMC/SMC studies have been reported in this review but it is believed that inclusion of additional studies will not change the overall results.

One conclusion recurs in almost all references; the SMC-values are very much site-dependent. This results in quite broad ranges of the EMC-values reported. Part of the variation of the found SMC/EMC-values may be a consequence of the fact that investigations have been reported from all over the world. Different countries have different sewer design traditions based on the specific countries geology layout, city planning and mentality of the inhabitants. Transfer of data from this review must therefore be undertaken with a fair amount of caution.

The variability of the phenomena studied also points out that in order to make conclusions based on measured data, it is necessary to carry out enough measurement campaigns to establish a sound statistical basis for these conclusions.
