"BREV TIL RÅVARELEVERANDØRER"

Dear sirs,

Database for environmental data on raw materials for paints

In connection with a project concerning environmental assessment of raw materials for our industry we kindly ask for your assistance in providing environmental data for certain raw materials, which your company is supplying to one or more of our member companies.

The project is initiated by the Danish Paintmakers Associations ans supported and financed by the Danish ministry for the environment. The purpose of the projekct is to establish a database of environmental information for the raw materials used in the production of paints, varnishes and printing inks in Denmark. The environmental information required is the data necessary for making an environmental assessment in a "cradle-to-grave" context in which the raw materials play an essential role.

The data needed is basically the "input/outputs" of materials and energy related to manufacturing of the raw materials you supply to the paint industry. Furthermore we would be interested in any additional environmental documentation - such as special toxicological or eco-toxicological studies - on the raw materials, which you may have compiled.

We require data on the following products:

..........................

..........................

An aggreement of confidentiality can be provided if needed. Furthermore, if required we will make arrangements that ensure the anonymity of your data in the database.

You may please choose one of the following methods to provide the data:

1. If you already have performed an LCI or LCA (lifecycle inventory, analysis or assessment) for the product(s):

If you forward copy of your report to us, then you will not need to bother with the enclosed questionnarie. We may contact you for some additional questions to ensure our correct interpretation of your results. For example it is frequently necessary to question whether extraction and transportation of raw materials is included in your resulting data..

2. If you have prepared an environmental report for the plant producing the product(s:

Please forward a copy of your report to us supplemented with the following information:

  • If your plant produces other products than the one(s) in question (e.g. as coproducts or byproducts) please indicate the relative share of the total energy comsumption and emissions etc. to be allocated to the product(s) in question.
  • Please indicate the amount of the most important of your own raw materials used pr. unit of the product(s), and the origin (country/city) of these materials.

Provided with such a set of information we should be able to extract the basic data we need. If you have any additional environmental data on the materials used as your own "raw materials" please enclose these.

3. If you do not have any LCA studies or environmental reports, please fill in the enclosed questionnaire:

The questionnaire contains explanatory notes. Please clearly state the units you use for each input or output.

We kindly ask you to send your reply to:

EnPro ApS
Lersø Parkalle 42
2100 Copenhagen Ø

Att.: Eva Wallstrøm

This procedure has benn chosen in order to secure the anonymity of your information before it is communicated to the industry.

If, contrary to our expectations, you should prefer not to answer our questionnaire, we kindly ask you to inform us accordingsly as soon as possible.

However, we hope you will take the trouble to answer our questionnaire as soon as possible in order for us to meet the time limit set for the project by the Danish Environmental Protection Agency.

If you have any questions concerning the questionnaire or our request for environmental data in general, please do not hesitate to contact us either by telephone +45 33 15 92 22 or by telefax +45 33 93 93 22. We will then establish contact to LCA-experts able to answer your questions.

We thank you for your kind assistance.

Yours sincerely,
The Danish Paintmakers’ Association

Vibeke Plambeck,

ENVIRONMENTAL DATA

on raw materials used in the paint industry

This questionnaire is issued by The Danish Paintmakers Association for the project "Environmental assesment of raw materials", supported and financed by the Danish Ministry of Environment. The aim of this project is to establish a database for environmental information about the raw materials used in the manufacturing of paints, varnishes and printing inks in Denmark. The environmental information sought is primarily the data necessary to make environmental assesments of paints in a "craddle-to-grave" context, in which the raw materials play an essential role.

In the questionnaire it should be noted that in the term "product" applies to your product, and the term "raw material" applies to any raw materials used for the manufacturing of your product.

Product in question: ___________________________

The quantitative information in this questionnaire should be provided per unit of material or product supplied to our company (e.g. per ton or per m3).

- Please indicate the unit used: _____________

- Please indicate which period your data covers: __________

If you have some information about Health and Safety for your product, please enclose a copy. (e.g. Health and Safety sheets, own tests for human toxicity, eco-toxicity, biodegradability and bioaccumulation).

1. Composition of the product

If the product is a mixture of more ingredients, please state the composition.

Please be as precise as possible concerning the content. Use approximate range values for the content if approbiate. Classified information shall be treated with due respect.

An aggreement of confidentiality can be written if required.

2. Environmental data

2.1 Inputs:

In this section please fill in the total consumption of water, basic raw materials and auxiliary materials required to produce one unit (ton or m3) of your product. Include all stages of the life cycle from supply of raw materials to shipment of the product.

"Co-products": If the manufacturing of your product leads to the production of co-products, please explain how you allocate (share) the emissions and energy use between this product and other products (e.g. by mass or by cost or by other means):

________________________

1 We need to know the total amount of materials for producing one unit of your product. The amount should include waste and spillage in your production.

2 The reason to ask about the origin for the material is to calculate the transport emissions for raw materials.

3 The reason to ask about the origin of the energy input is to calculate the precombustion and transport energy used and their related emissions.

4 You may apply the EWC codes as defined by Council Decision (94/904/EC) on establishing a list of hazardous waste.
