Figur 5: The supply of packaging covering the period 1998-2007 accounted in 1.000 tonnes

Furthermore, a survey of the use of returnable packaging has been completed. This shows that there is a supply of 301 millions returnable packaging and in total this packaging circulated 1.5 billion times in 2007. If this quantity of packaging were one-way packaging, it would have increased the total supply of packaging by 1,200,000 tonnes per year – more than a doubling of the present quantity of packaging.

The packaging statistics include a calculation of where the packaging quantities end as waste – in other words from where is the packaging has to be collected prior to its disposal. This calculation will also be done in the years to come. The greatest packaging amount has to be disposed from the private households. These account for approx. 46% of the total packaging waste.
