Investigative studies of existing methods of well abandoning

A thorough study of existing methods of well abandoning and related technologies in Denmark as well as in other countries has been conducted. The methods used in Europe are similar to the ones used in Denmark. U.S.A. on the contrary utilizes several methods of which are worth taking in consideration in developing new methods of well sealing. The oil industry has been using similar technologies regarding blowbacks and decommissioning oil and gas wells. Some of the technologies could be modified for groundwater use.

Choice of method

The results of the research indicated that there was a need for complete well sealing concept.

Specific criteria were made in order to choose the appropriate well sealing concept of which consists of the following elements:
Data collection.
Creating a strategy for the well sealing.
Well sealing.
Quality assurance.

The method used for sealing consists of:
Perforation of the casing, the perforated interval is situated in the same depth as the layers of clay.
Groutinjection in and outside the casing thus sealing the annulus.

Test

The theory behind the well sealing concept was tested by the use of models and field tests. Based on the results from the previous tests a water well was sealed. The sealing process was satisfactory.

Conclusion and recommendation

A well sealing concept has been developed and tested with satisfactory results. The well sealing concept is appropriate and recommendable for sealing most types of wells furthermore the concept can be modified for use sealing dug wells.
