Evaluation of Possibilities for Reducing the Use of Pesticides in Horticulture and Fruit Growing

Summary

This final report concerning the project ”Evaluation of possibilities for reducing the use of pesticides in horticulture” is intended for the analysis made by the Kirsten Jensen Committee on the consequences of a reduction in pesticide use in horticulture production.

The purpose of the project was to carry out an environmental appraisal of pesticide use in horticulture, to identify documented alternative methods of preventing or controlling pests, and to evaluate the consequences of using alternative, non-chemical methods instead of pesticides. Furthermore the purpose was to identify the need for research and to map current public research in Denmark concerning alternative methods.

The final report is a summary of the knowledge documented in detail in four independent reports enclosed as appendix 1-4 to this report. These four reports are the background for an evaluation of the need for research and development regarding alternative methods with the overall aim of reducing the pesticide use. The mapping of the current public research into alternative methods in Denmark was done using a questionnaire sent to the relevant institutions. In identifying the future need for research, the areas were put in order of priority according to where the largest reduction in pesticide use would be expected.
