Working report 10/2000

Alternatives to animal experiments for eye irritation.

Abstract
The goal of the project was to evaluate the prospect for the replacement of rabbit eye irritation studies with in vitro tests. A corneal tissue equivalent model, SKIN2 ZK 1200, was used to evaluate 55 cosmetic ingredients and finished products. The study was a part of a large validation study arranged by the european cosmetics industry (COLIPA). The tissue model performed very well in the prediction of acute eye irritation in rabbit experiments, both for ingredients and finished products. A new testing procedure developed with the tissue model showed also promise for prediction of recovery from ocular irritation.
