Summary and conclusions

This is a short summary of the project ‘Sustainable Refurbishment and Maintenance of Owner-Occupied Detached Houses’.

The owners of owner-occupied detached houses have no interest in sustainable refurbishment and maintenance of their houses. We knew that the interest was low, but it is surprisingly low: none of the almost 100 owners we have been in contact with thinks of sustainability in relation to their house.

The project has been aiming at identifying the owners of owner-occupied detached houses as a target group for disseminating results concerning sustainable refurbishment and maintenance of their houses. It has been decisive to identify ways of explaining the owners the benefits of sustainable refurbishment and maintenance.

The house owners focus on design and functionality. They listen to arguments concerning quality, durability, economy, health, comfort and easy maintenance. These are the words to be used when we are telling the owners about sustainable solutions.

The owners are looking for trustworthy information. In principle, they are looking for detailed guides, telling them exactly how to solve the specific problem, they have to solve in a house like their own. In relation to the project we have developed a concept for pamphlets aimed at the owners. The owners need simple advises. Three pamphlets, one on water, one on windows and one on kitchens, have been printed and distributed through DIY-markets.
