Pesticide Concentrations in Soil Expected after Industrial Pesticide Application

3 Summary and Conclusions

On basis of children’s potential exposure to soil and comparison with a maximum intake of peticides from water and air, a soil quality criterion of 1 mg pesticide per kg has been proposed. A calculation of the pesticide residual concentration after application of 13 of the most commonly used pesticides in Danish agriculture shows that the proposed soil quality criterion can be observed in most cases. There will be incidents where the soil quality criterion is exceeded immediately after spraying and after 3 months, especially in areas with repeated spraying, but only in a few cases after 12 months (after very long half-lives). Thus, it seems possible to observe a soil quality criterion of 1 mg/kg when it is compared with the residual concentrations that one may expect to find about one year after normal agricultural use of pesticides.
