Home Composting Statistics 2001

Summary and conclusions

“Statistics on home composting for 2001” contains estimates on the number of municipal schemes for home- and localcomposting, the number of households in such schemes and the amount of organic food-waste which is home-/localcomposted through these schemes.

The assessment is based on information from the Municipial Database, given by the municipalities. The Municipial Database contains information about the nature of the home-/localcomposting schemes and the number of registred users. The statistic is partialy based on an estimate, due to the lack of informations from some of the municipalities.

The calculation of the amount of organic food-waste being composted by each household is based on data from a previous survey. In the survey the amount of organic food-waste reported being composted was compared to the actual amount found in the thrash at a specific household.

The calculation of the amount of organic food-waste composted through the schemes is based on different principles to prior years. A comparison of the amount of organic food-waste in relation to earlier statistics is therefore not viable.

It is estimated that 404,000 households participate in homecomposting of organic refuge. Each household generates 50 kg of organic food-waste per year in average. This sums up to a total of 20,200 tons.
