Food Waste Statistics 2001

Summary and conclusions

“Statistics on Food Waste for 2001” describes the amount, the processing and sale of food waste from large-scale catering establishments, retail trade and manufacturing industry, respectively.

The most important findings of “Statistics on Food Waste for 2001” are the following:

  • 20,637 tons of food waste was collected from large-scale catering establishments. This is from 70 to100 per cent of the estimated potential. The collection was carried out at 2,090 large-scale catering establishments.
  • 3,144 tons of food waste was collected from the retail trade and manufacturing companies. Approximatly 70 companies participated in the collection scheme. There is a large uncertainty connected to the estimation of the potential of food waste from companies of this type.
  • Most of the collected food waste is reprocessed into food pulp (19,886 tons) which is sold to 30 pig breeders.
  • In addition 1,000 tons of meat-and-bone meal or meal/dripping is made from the collected food waste.
