Statistics on Agricultural Application of Waste from Households, Institutions and Enterprises 2001

Summary and conclusions

“Statistics on application related to soil for 2001” describes the amount, the processing and the use of waste from households, institutions and companies – cf. Statutory Order on Sludge.

In addition, the statistics show the content of nutritious matters and heavy metals found in the waste.

The most important findings are:

  • The collected amount of waste (wet weight) amounted to 3,667,224 tons. This amount is almost 710,000 tons more than recorded in 2000.
  • The average percentage of dry matter is 5.6 per cent. This results in a total net weight when dry of 205,737 tons. This amount is almost 30,000 tons more than recorded in 2000 when the percentage of dry matter was 5.8 per cent.
  • A total of 296 companies reported. This is 26 companies more than in 2000. It is noted that a few big manufacturers deal with most of the waste.
  • More than 90 per cent of the waste (net weight when dry) is used for agriculture purposes.
  • At least 55 per cent of the waste consists of what is termed “§21 product”.
  • The nutrient content of the waste requires that the waste is dispersed over an area of at least 110,000 hectares.

The statistics have records showing that the waste was listed under the different counties. Therefore it only shows where the waste was produced. The records do not show where the waste was disposed of (used).

In relation to prior years a new and better method of calculating the mean concentrations of nutrients and heavy metals have been used.
